About the Department
Responsibilities
The Sanibel Department of Administrative Services is responsible for six distinct operations:
- human resources, including labor relations;
- risk management;
- benefits administration;
- training;
- purchasing; and
- grants writing.
2008 Goals
Current goals of the Sanibel Department of Administrative Services include the following:
- Continue random drug testing program for Police Officers and DOT regulated employees.
- Amend the Retirement Health Savings Plan for mandatory participation by groups in accordance with IRS guidance.
- Develop and present customer service training.
- Conduct mandatory training as required.
- Coordinate the negotiation of union agreements with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and Fraternal Order of Police.
- Develop policy concerning body art for employees who deal with the public.
2007 Accomplishments
Recent accomplishments of the Sanibel Department of Administrative Services include the following:
- Developed and implemented a new protective work shoe policy and procedure.
- Developed and implemented a cell phone use policy.
- Added pre-paid legal as a voluntary benefit for employees
- Provided sexual harassment training for new City hires.
- Continued random drug testing for police officers and Department of Transportation regulated positions.
- Coordinated the rewriting of the CHR five-year agreement for City Council approval.
- Obtained media relations consultant services for severe weather emergencies.
Upcoming Challenges
The City is continuing to face significant challenges relative to recruiting and retaining qualified employees, especially due to foreseeable retirements.
