City of Sanibel Director of Recreation Andrea Miller Awarded Scholarship for Exceptional Emerging Leaders

City of Sanibel Director of Recreation Andrea Miller has been awarded a full scholarship to the intensive 4 ½ day leadership program, Leadership Flight School™.

Miller’s commitment to her organization has led to an increase in the number of programs and events available to the community. Her impact has led to a rapid increase in community involvement.

Upon announcing Director Miller's selection for full scholarship Sanibel City Manager Judie Zimomra stated, "We are honored when organizations such as the Leadership Flight SchoolTM recognize the management talent of our team members such as Director Miller. It is important that we all continue to enhance our skills, and this is a unique opportunity for very high quality training at no expense to the City."

Leadership Flight School™ (LFS™) is a transformational course in leadership offered by Bartell & Bartell, Ltd. in State College, Pennsylvania. Based on the principles of servant leadership, the program has graduated more than 1,300 seasoned and emerging leaders from around the world. Over 92% of alumni have rated LFS™ as “the best program” they have ever attended. LFS™ Alumni serve organizations from the public sector to private, including police departments and Fortune 500 companies, and range from mid-level managers to senior executives. The program has hosted over 100 classes and will celebrate its 10th anniversary in February 2012.

Miller joined the City of Sanibel staff in 2007 as Aquatics Supervisor and has served as Acting Director since April, 2011. Her accomplishments while serving as Acting Director include, increasing operating revenues, developing Backyard Game Night, Toddler Time Program, increasing teen community events, increasing fitness programs including early morning and lunch yoga classes.

A graduate from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Miller holds a Bachelor of Science in Education with a dual major in Health and Physical Education. Miller holds the following certifications:

  • Certified Parks & Recreation Professional (CPRP) through National Recreation & Parks Association
  • Certified Red Cross First Aid and CPR PR Instructor & Instructor Trainer
  • Certified Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor & Instructor Trainer
  • Certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor & Instructor Trainer
  • Certified Red Cross Babysitting and Pet First Aid Instructor
  • Certified Pool Operator
  • Certified USWFA Water Aerobics Instructor
  • Certified AFAA Group Fitness Instructor
  • Certified Arthritis Foundation Water Exercise Instructor

Prior to joining the City of Sanibel Miller worked as a Health and Physical Education teacher and coach in the Lee County School District and in the South Middleton School District in Pennsylvania. In 2006 Miller was a Lee County School District Golden Apple Finalist. Miller is currently pursing Certification through National Recreation and Park Association Directors School.

Miller and her husband Matt, a teacher at Dunbar High School, Lee County School District, are parents to daughter Kaia, 7 years old and son Matthew, 18 months.
