City of Sanibel Improves Accessibility to Fishing Pier
In response to persons who use wheelchairs and scooters for accessibility, the City of Sanibel recently installed a handicap accessible surface to traverse the transition area between the shell parking lot & the ramp at the City of Sanibel’s Fishing Pier. The materials were purchased with Tourism Development Council funds from Mobimat® for $4,169.00. The materials were installed by the City of Sanibel Department of Public Works.
Upon completion of the project Sanibel City Manager Judie Zimomra stated “We always appreciate and welcome the input of our citizens and visitors on all issues, including how we can continue to provide accessibility to Sanibel’s natural resources and municipal facilities. We are pleased that everyone can now gain easy access to our Pier."
The City of Sanibel also provides residents and visitors free use of large tire Beach Wheelchairs which are delivered to the park or rental unit of the user. The cost of the beach wheelchairs as well as the delivery to the users is totally underwritten by Billy Kirkland of Billy’s Rentals. Requests for the wheelchair are processed through the City of Sanibel Police Department 239-472-3111.
The Sanibel Fishing Pier is located at Lighthouse Beach Park. Click here (pdf 1.20 MB) to access a map of all Sanibel’s trails and beaches.
