For each species, a variety of photos, taken mostly by Beanland herself, show the distinguishing characteristics of each plant, including leaf shape, flowers, fruits, growth habit and more. The Vegetation Committee is hopeful that the slideshow will be useful for landscape and vegetation contractors seeking to pass the City’s Vegetation Competency Course and for anyone else wanting to increase their knowledge of Sanibel’s native plants.

Additionally, residents and visitors interested in the Island’s environmental issues are encouraged to access the second edition (2009) of the “Environmental Reference Handbook”, also available on www.mysanibel.com . Developed by the Vegetation Committee, this handbook was created to provide an overview and appreciation of the guidelines the City has put in place to protect our sanctuary Island. It outlines the major environmental issues that impact everyone living or doing business on Sanibel.

Residents who are interested in native plants and other environmental issues may also consider joining the Vegetation Committee. The Sanibel City Council is currently accepting applications. The Vegetation Committee meets the first Thursday of each month at 1:30 PM in MacKenzie Hall at City Hall, 800 Dunlop Road. Appointees must be residents of Sanibel and have passed the Vegetation Competency Test.
