The complimentary Sanibel-Captiva Lions Club Diabetes Screening will be performed from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, December 9th at the Center 4 Life. The Lions are planning their vision screening with the goal of eliminating preventable blindness. The club will be screening first for diabetes, which if left uncontrolled can lead to diabetic retinopathy and eventually blindness. Secondly, glaucoma, which affects the peripheral vision first but can also lead to blindness if not treated. These diseases are insidious in that you can live unknowingly with them while they destroy parts of the optic nerve. By the time symptoms appear, the damage caused cannot be repaired. Early detection is key.
The Lion screeners have been trained and certified by a doctor and use all appropriate methods to insure antiseptic conditions and privacy during the screening. Screenings are performed on a first come, first serve basis.
