Grant Funded Dixie Beach Blvd. Restoration Project - May 27, 2008

City commences 100% Grant Funded Dixie Beach Boulevard 77-acre Mangrove Restoration Project to Improve Fisheries and Wading Bird Habitat

Today, the City of Sanibel announced that the concrete pipe installation will begin on May 27, 2008, on Dixie Beach Boulevard between Albatross Road and Royal Poinciana Drive.

This 100% grant funded Dixie Beach Mangrove Restoration Project will restore tidal flushing to 77 acres of semi-impounded mangrove forest located on the east side of Dixie Beach Boulevard. This project is being funded with a $70,000 grant from the South Florida Water Management District and a $40,000 “Reprogramming” grant received from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This mangrove restoration project will result in improvements to fisheries and wading bird habitat.

The project includes the installation of four 36” diameter road crossing pipes to improve water flow under Dixie Beach Boulevard and all associated site restoration work.

The City has contracted with MAJ Contracting, Inc. to perform the work, and the project is scheduled to last 60 days. Construction hours for this project are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, including some Saturday work.

The contractor is required to maintain one-way traffic at all times. However, delays can be expected and motorists, pedestrians and cyclists should plan their travel accordingly. Every effort will be made to maintain access to the residences in this area at all times.

Any one with questions and or comments regarding this project is invited to contact the City of Sanibel Public Works Department at (239) 472-6397.
