Optimist Club and Sanibel Recreation Center Summer Campers Record Catch of the Day

Sanibel Recreation Center summer camper Hannah Carroll had the catch of the day while fishing with the Optimist Club and her fellow Optimist Junior Anglers. She reeled in a 25 inch Speckled Sea Trout which was a record fish on Captain Dave’s boat out of Tarpon Bay. Hannah was proud of her catch saying, “It was one of the biggest trouts I’ve ever caught.”

The Optimist Club has organized fishing outings for the summer campers throughout the ten weeks of summer camp where they caught several different species of fish such as pin fish, trout, cat fish, puffer fish and even a nurse shark. The Optimist Junior Anglers consists of 5th through 8th grade summer campers with varying levels of fishing experience. Members of the Optimist Club taught the kids the ins and outs of fishing from baiting the hooks to identifying their catch. The outings were on various Sanibel beaches as well as a few boat trips donated by Tarpon Bay Explorers. Each week Bailey’s donated 3 dozen shrimp for the junior anglers to use. They wrapped up the summer with a trip to the causeway for fishing and a hot dog cookout.
