The City announced today that landscaping work will begin on August 25, 2008 along Periwinkle Way between Lindgren Boulevard and Tarpon Bay Road and on Palm Ridge Road. The project includes the planting of native shrubs and flowers under and around trees planted as part of the Periwinkle Way Corridor Planting Projects. A total of 5,487 native shrubs and flowers will be planted as part of Phase three.

The third phase of plantings is being funded in part by funds contributed by Sanibel Beautification, Inc. and a grant from the Florida Department of Forestry. Over ninety-five percent of the trees planted in 2006 & 2007 as phase one and two of this project have survived with a mortality rate of less than five percent. “This project is only possible due to the dedicated and generous efforts of Sanibel Beautification, Inc. and the entire Sanibel community,” stated City Manager Judie Zimomra.

The City has contracted with All Native Garden Center & Plant Nursery, Inc. to perform this native plant installation in the amount of $36,145. Construction hours for this work, which is scheduled to last approximately 60 days, are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and including some Saturdays.

This work is being done pursuant to the Periwinkle Way Corridor Restoration Master Plan, approved by City Council. The entire restoration area is approximately 3 miles long from the intersection at Lindgren Boulevard to the intersection at Tarpon Bay Road. Also included are Palm Ridge Road, a half-mile segment of Tarpon Bay Road and Island Inn Road

Due to the nature of the landscaping work, Periwinkle Way and Palm Ridge Road may need to be intermittently closed to traffic for short periods of time. The contractor is required to maintain one-way traffic at all times. Please be prepared to expect minor delays. Every effort will be made to maintain access to the residences and businesses at all times.

Anyone with questions and or comments regarding the project is invited to contact the City of Sanibel Public Works Department at (239) 472-6397.
