The City of Sanibel Recreation Department would like to recognize the Member of the Month, Eileen Roberts.
Eileen Roberts and her husband Vernon purchased their home on Sanibel in 1988. In past years they have spent holidays on Sanibel but now Roberts finds herself here for 11 months at a time. She has been a member at the Sanibel Recreation Center for 2 years although she also used to attend water aerobic classes at the “old pool”. The pool is her life line and while she has participated in every class offered, water aerobics and Zumba have become her favorites. She spends 16 hours a week participating in fitness classes!
As a member of the Sanibel Recreation Center, Roberts has lost weight and has been able to avoid having orthopedic surgery on her left knee. Through her hard work in water aerobic classes she was able to build up her muscles along her knee. When she went back to the orthopedic surgeon for a check-up, he was amazed at her progress and even referred to her as “the poster child for continuing healthy activities for your mind and body.” When asked how being a member of the Sanibel Recreation Center has impacted her life, Roberts responded, “I am a happier, healthier person that I hope can be an inspiration to others – younger and older. I love the challenge that the Recreation Center offers.”
Roberts, originally from Great Falls, Virginia, has been married to her college sweetheart for 41 years. They have two children, one living in Arlington, Virginia and the other in Charleston, South Carolina. She taught and was a guidance counselor in Fairfax County, Virginia for 35 years before retiring 3 years ago. Roberts loves everything that Sanibel has to offer, especially the Recreation Center.
