The City of Sanibel Recreation Department would like to recognize the Member of the Month, Robert Emmett.
Robert Emmett and his wife Adelaide Shirley built their home on Sanibel Island in 1981 and were seasonal residents between New York and Sanibel until 1983 when they made the decision to retire to the island permanently. They both became members at the Sanbel Recreation Center in early 2009 for health reasons. Mr. Emmett was diagnosed with 7 major blockages in 3 arteries when his cardiologist told him that his options were surgery or exercise. Fourteen years later and at the age of 92, he’s in good physical and mental health. Mr. Emmett’s favorite feature of the facility is the weight room for the cardio equipment and it offers the perfect opportunity to socialize. When asked how being a member has impacted his life Mr. Emmett responds, “The Sanibel Recreation Center has much to offer to young and old because of its comprehensive facilities and programs. It is a good place to meet people and socialize. The staff is warm and helpful. When my wife passed away a year ago, they were very supportive and helped me through the pain at her loss. I cannot say enough about how wonderful they are”.
Mr. Emmett has his Bachelor of Science degree in math and physics and was a physicist with the Signal Corps Engineering Laboratory in the field of Radar. He went into the service during World War II and served with the United States Army Signal Corps in the European Theater and after being discharged he worked in the field of business valuation until retirement. Mr. Emmett has been a volunteer at the Sanibel Library for many years and it is still one of his favorite places to be. Mr. and Mrs. Emmett were married for 67 years and have two sons.
