Sanibel Recreation Department Recognizes Members of the Month Jim & Gay Griffith
The City of Sanibel Recreation Department would like to recognize the Members of the Month, Jim and Gay Griffith.
Jim and Gay Griffith have been visiting Sanibel since 1979 and have owned property since 1981. They utilized the former recreation center to establish a regular habit of daily exercise and now continue this routine as members of the new Sanibel Recreation Center since it’s opening in December 2007.
Mrs. Griffith has always loved the water. She was on her college synchronized swimming team and later taught many boy scouts the necessary skills to earn their swimming and lifesaving merit badges so naturally she enjoys the water aerobics classes. Mrs. Griffith attends 3 water aerobics classes each week which are a wonderful source of non-impact therapeutic exercise for her disabilities.
Mr. Griffith prefers the convenience of working out in the weight room in addition to jogging on the beach and shared use paths. They both enjoy the health benefits of exercising and feeling energized and physically fit after each workout. When asked their comments about the Sanibel Recreation Center they replied, “The facility speaks for itself but what makes it extra special are the people you meet and the courteous, helpful, proficient staff members. We always feel welcome and special.”
Mr. and Mrs. Griffith met in college at the University of Connecticut. Shortly after graduating they moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Mrs. Griffith taught and Mr. Griffith worked in engineering. He retired In 1992 and they built a house in the North Georgia Mountains where they enjoyed going on hikes, kayaking and traveling. They built their permanent home on Sanibel in 1999 and moved here as permanent residents. Mr. and Mrs. Griffith are active volunteers at Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, The International Osprey Foundation and Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society where Mr. Griffith currently serves as President. He has also recently been elected to the board of directors of the Island Water Association. Mr. and Mrs. Griffith have two sons and two daughters and nine grandchildren.
