WATERSPOUT WARNING
The National Weather Service has issued a notice for the potential formation of weak waterspouts from Bonita Springs north to Charlotte County through the morning hours. Atmospheric conditions are favorable for the formation of waterspouts this morning so keep a close eye on the sky and immediately report any sightings to the Sanibel Police Department at (239) 472-3111.
A waterspout is a tornado of lesser whirlwind occurring over water and resulting in a funnel-shaped whirling column of air and spray. During the summer months, air temperatures and water temperatures are conducive for tornadic activity including waterspouts and funnel clouds. Follow the below safety tips from the Sanibel Police Department.
· Go to an inside room without windows on the lowest level of the house (a closet, bathroom, or interior hall) Protect your body from flying debris with a heavy blanket or sleeping bag.
· Avoid windows. Opening windows to equalize pressure is ineffective in reducing damage during a tornado. Don’t worry about windows: worry about finding shelter and protecting yourself.
Residents are advised to closely monitor the skies and the local weather for changing conditions this morning.
