At the July 17, 2012, Sanibel City Council meeting, Vice Mayor Mick Denham was presented the Home Rule HERO Award from the Florida League of Cities. Scott Dudley (left photo), the League’s legislative director, presented Denham with the award for advocating local water quality control during the 2012 Legislative Session in Tallahassee and throughout this year. Forrest Banks (right photo), the Southwest Florida League of Cities president and a City of Fort Myers councilmember, also attended the meeting to honor Denham for his efforts.
The Florida League of Cities presents the Home Rule HERO Award to outstanding advocates who protect the home rule rights of city constituents and municipal citizens throughout the state.
Regarding the award, Denham said: "It's an honor to receive this recognition. Every year in Tallahassee we work to ensure that we maintain local control over our environment and water quality, but it is clear that in any year all our good work could be overturned in one bill. In addition to working with the legislature there, we want to have an extensive citizen education program explaining how to choose and use fertilizer responsibly."
Denham has served on the Sanibel City Council since March 2005. He served three terms as mayor in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Denham is a voting delegate to the Florida League of Cities, serving both on the Florida League of Cities Energy and Environmental Quality Legislative Policy Committee. He also serves as the Council liaison to the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council (RPC) and is a member of the Regional Watersheds Committee. The Vice Mayor is an alternate Council liaison to the General Employees’ Pension Board of Trustees, Police Officers’ Pension Board of Trustees and the for Metropolitan Planning Commission (MPO). He has also been appointed to the Regional Planning Council Executive Committee, Strategy team and Sustainable Communities HUD Grant team.
