Hurricane Reentry Pass Program
It is the City of Sanibel’s goal to return residents, property owners, and business owners back to the Island as quickly and safely as possible. Hurricane Reentry Passes maximize security while providing authorized persons access to their properties. The following updates have been added to the Hurricane Reentry Pass Program:
Hurricane Reentry Passes- In order to make reentry easier after an evacuation, all rearview mirrors should display a City of Sanibel Hurricane Reentry Pass. The Hurricane Reentry Passes are issued to residents, property owners, and business owners of Sanibel and Captiva yearly. Hurricane Reentry Passes are color coded, numbered, and also have the distinctive “Zone” watermark on them.

The Hurricane Reentry Passes also have valuable information for both hurricane preparedness and reentry on the reverse side. In addition, the City of Sanibel has developed two new hurricane brochures for residents and business owners. The brochures double as Hurricane Reentry Pass holders. It is suggested that the brochure and Hurricane Reentry Pass be kept in the glove box for easy access.
Hurricane Reentry Passes are limited to one per household, and at the same time, expedite the number of vehicles returning after an evacuation during the recovery phase.
Exclusion of wallet passes - Wallet passes have been eliminated since 2005. The plan is to expedite reentry and continue to keep security measures at the highest level. The Hurricane Reentry Pass accomplishes both of these purposes.
Driver’s license- a valid Florida driver’s license with a physical Sanibel or Captiva address (no post office box) may still be used. However, a Hurricane Reentry Pass should expedite your return.
City Council adopted Ordinance number 06-008 – An ordinance prohibiting the copying, altering, or any other unauthorized reproduction, counterfeiting, or fabrication of City of Sanibel Hurricane Passes.
Again, the most expedient way to return for Sanibel residents, property owners, and business owners is to obtain your Hurricane Hangtags. They will better identify where you are supposed to be for security purpose and also allow phased reentry if warranted. Access could be delayed due to any ongoing response and recovery efforts on Sanibel and Captiva.
