This week, the City of Sanibel continued to right-size the municipal Building Department with the elimination of an additional building inspector and a part-time clerical position. Staffing levels in the Sanibel Building Department peaked on August 19, 2004, as permits processing commenced for post-Hurricane Charley with 15 employees, including 10 contract employees. After this week’s reductions, the Sanibel Building Department staff consists of four employees; the Building Official and Deputy Building Official who now conduct all inspections, plans review, and professional functions of the department and two permit and licensing technicians.
For accounting purposes, the Sanibel Building Department functions as an Independent Fund and is solely funded from permit revenues. Upon announcing the additional staffing adjustment, City Manager Judie Zimomra stated, “We continuously evaluate all City operations to be certain staffing levels are consistent with service demands and within budget. We are prepared to make further adjustments as warranted and required. At this time, we believe current staff will meet current demand.”
