Outdoor Recreation

Since incorporating as a City, we have invested in walking trails and paths in addition to our 22.6 miles of paved Shared Use Paths. Hiking provides Sanibel residents with great opportunities to enjoy Sanibel’s beautiful weather, lush subtropical vegetation, and abundant wildlife. Excellent walking trails are located throughout the Island, including trails developed by the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation and the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

In addition to many trails and Shared Use Paths, the City has developed a Public Boat Ramp and a Fishing Pier. Through a grant, the Canoe and Kayak Launch at Bowman’s Beach has recently been renovated and the Fitness Trail reconstructed after being destroyed by Hurricane Charley. Canoes and kayaks can also be launched from the northern terminus of Bailey Road. Over the past two years, the City has obtained grants to develop playgrounds at Bowman’s Beach and Community Park on Periwinkle Way.

Sanibel residents have access to our 15.5 miles of world-class beaches. Picnicking facilities and restrooms are located throughout the beaches. Sanibel residents and property owners can obtain beach parking passes or reserve a wide-tire wheelchair for beach accessibility for the physically challenged for use at area beaches from the Sanibel Police Department, 239-472-3111.
