Lee County Emergency Management Testing New Public Notification System Wednesday, August 18, 2010

Lee County Emergency Management, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Lee County Port Authority and the cities of Fort Myers and Sanibel recently signed a contract with Emergency Communications Network to lease its CodeRED high-speed emergency notifications system. CodeRED, already in place in Cape Coral and Fort Myers Beach, now geographically covers all of Lee County to allow residents to receive health and safety alerts.

NEW! Arthritis Foundation Water Exercise Classes at the Sanibel Recreation Center

This new program will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. from September 6th – October 13th.

Dodgeball Tournament at the Sanibel Recreation Center

On Friday, August 20th at 6:30 p.m. the Sanibel Recreation Center will be hosting a Dodgeball Tournament for ages 14 and up.

Hammerheads Make Further Improvements at Sanibel Historical Museum and Village

As of this summer, the Hammerheads have replaced 99-percent of the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village boardwalks. The Hammerheads are an all-volunteer group.

Turner Beach Restrooms Closed Due to Utility Work from 9 AM to 12 PM on August 4th

On Wednesday, August 4th, the Island Water Association will be performing utility work that will require the shutdown of the Turner Beach restrooms from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. We apologize for any inconvenience experienced due to this necessary utility work.

The National Automotive Dealers Association Donates CPR Training Mannequin to the Sanibel Recreation Center

On Tuesday July 20, 2010 the Sanibel Recreation Center received a donation of a Resusci Anne CPR Training Mannequin from the National Automotive Dealers Charitable Foundation and the Florida Dealers Association.

Annual Shared Use Path Repairs Project - Path Parallel to Rabbit Road - August 2

Beginning Monday, August 2, the City of Sanibel’s contractor, Bonness Inc., will begin the scheduled asphalt repairs to the Shared Use Path running parallel to Rabbit Road. The work is expected to take approximately one week to complete.

REMINDER - The Sanibel Recreation Center Gymnasium and Weight Room Will Be Closed For Annual Maintenance - All Classes To Be Held

The Sanibel Recreation Center Gymnasium and Weight Room, located at 3880 Sanibel-Captiva Road, will be closed to the public for annual maintenance from Monday, August 9th through Sunday, August 15th.

2010 Shared Use Path Repair Project Begins

The City of Sanibel’s annual repairs to the Shared Use Paths began Monday, July 26, 2010. For safety, the areas under repair will be barricaded off from users. All path users are reminded to use caution while navigating around construction zones.

Traffic Advisory

On Wednesday, July 28th and Thursday, July 29th from 8 AM to 1 PM, the vegetation along Periwinkle Way from Bailey Road to Palm Ridge Road will be trimmed. Two lane traffic will be maintained, however there will be short periods of time when traffic will be stopped to cut overhanging limbs.

SANIBEL INCLUDED IN NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TROPICAL STORM WARNING

The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm warning for the Southwest Florida coast as far north as Englewood due to Tropical Storm Bonnie.

Traffic Advisory

Due to an emergency manhole repair, Periwinkle Way traffic will be reduced to one lane between Donax Street and Dixie Beach Boulevard on Friday, July 23 between the hours of 8:30 AM and 12:30 PM. It is suggested that alternate routes be utilized during this time period.
